Tight, Nagging Shoulder Pain From Working at Home? Why Painkillers Aren't Fixing It

shoulder muscle pain treatment Nairobi — man stretching a tight shoulder while working on a laptop on the couch, Katasi Physiotherapy Westlands

Look familiar? Laptop on your lap, sinking into the couch, pulling your arm across your chest to stretch out that tight shoulder, just like the man in the photo. You've been working from home all week. By evening, the top of your shoulder feels tight and heavy, like a pulled muscle. You keep rolling it, squeezing it and stretching it. You take painkillers, but the nagging ache is still there the next day.

What's really going on

This is usually not a torn or injured muscle. It's an overworked one. The muscle across the top of your shoulder (the trapezius) and the muscles between your neck and shoulder blade hold your head and arms up all day. When you hunch over a laptop on the couch, your head drifts forward and your shoulders creep up towards your ears. Those muscles stay switched on for hours, get tired, and form tight, tender knots. That's the pulled feeling.

Signs it's muscle pain from posture

  • A tight, nagging ache on top of the shoulder or near the shoulder blade
  • Tender knots you can feel when you press
  • An urge to stretch or squeeze the shoulder all the time
  • Worse by evening or after long video calls, better on days off
  • Sometimes a stiff neck or headache along with it

Why painkillers don't make it go away

Painkillers can quieten the pain for a few hours, but they don't relax a knotted muscle or change how you sit. As long as you work the same way, the muscle keeps getting overloaded and the pain keeps coming back.

4 quick fixes for working from home

  1. Get off the couch. Work at a table, with your back supported and feet on the floor.
  2. Lift your screen. Put your laptop on books so the screen is at eye level, and use a separate keyboard if you can.
  3. Use earphones for calls. Never hold the phone between your ear and shoulder.
  4. Move every 30 to 45 minutes. Roll your shoulders back, walk around, then sit again.

How Katasi Physiotherapy treats shoulder muscle pain

We check your neck, shoulders and upper back, and ask how you work at home. Dry needling and hands-on release ease the tight knots, often bringing relief in the first session. Then you get simple stretches and strengthening exercises for your shoulder blade muscles, plus a work-from-home setup that keeps the pain away. If the pain is deep in the shoulder joint when you lift your arm, read Shoulder Pain When Lifting Your Arm? If it burns between your shoulder blades, read That Burning Pain Between Your Shoulder Blades.

See a doctor first if

Your shoulder pain came with chest pain or shortness of breath, followed a fall, or your arm is numb or weak.
