Can't Bend Over Because of Lower Back Pain? Why Your Back Feels Stuck and How to Free It

can't bend over lower back pain — man bending to touch his toes after physiotherapy for a stiff lower back, Katasi Physiotherapy Westlands Nairobi

Look at the man in the photo, bending down and touching his toes with ease. A few months ago, that was you. Now you bend forward and your lower back stops you before your hands even reach your knees. Putting on trousers means sitting on the bed and fighting with each leg. Stepping over a trench by the road or up onto a stone while walking makes your back grab. You feel stiff, stuck and much older than you are.

If this is you, you're not alone, and your back isn't "finished." This is one of the most treatable types of back pain we see in Westlands.

What's going on in your back

Physiotherapists call this low back pain with movement loss. In plain words: the muscles along your lower back have tightened up and gone into spasm, and they're acting like a locked brake. Your spine itself is usually fine, but the tight muscles won't let it bend, so every attempt to reach down hurts and stops short.

This often starts after:

  • A strain from lifting, cleaning or the gym
  • Weeks of long sitting at a desk or in traffic
  • An old back episode that never fully loosened
  • Stopping exercise, so the back slowly lost its movement

Signs this is your type of back pain

  • You can't bend to touch your toes or even your knees
  • Putting on trousers, socks or shoes is a struggle
  • Lifting your leg onto a step, stone or kerb is stiff or painful
  • Your back feels tight and stuck, worse in the morning or after sitting
  • Pain stays in your back rather than running down your leg

Why rest and painkillers don't fix it

Resting keeps the back still, so it stays stiff. Painkillers can dull the ache but don't loosen the muscles or bring the movement back. The longer the back stays stuck, the more the stiffness settles in.

How Katasi Physiotherapy gets you bending again

We measure how far your back bends and find which muscles and joints are holding it back. Then we:

  • Release the spasm with hands-on therapy, massage and dry needling
  • Loosen stiff joints in your lower back and hips with gentle mobilisation
  • Rebuild your bend with simple, step-by-step movement exercises
  • Strengthen your back, hips and tummy so the stiffness doesn't come back

Many people notice they can bend further by the end of the first session.
