Tight Hip After a Long Drive? Why Your Hip Catches and Your Back Aches

You've just driven to Nakuru, or sat through a full day at your desk. You stand up and your hip won't straighten. The front of it feels tight, like something is holding on. Your first steps are stiff, the hip seems to catch, and your lower back starts to ache. After walking around for a while it loosens, until the next long sit.
What's going on
When you sit, the muscles at the front of your hip stay shortened for hours. Meanwhile your buttock muscles, which should pull your hip straight when you stand and walk, switch off and get weaker. With weak buttocks, the front hip muscles do more of the work, get even tighter, and keep the hip slightly bent. That's the holding, catching feeling.
Why your lower back gets involved
The front hip muscles attach to your lower spine. When they're tight, they pull your lower back into an arch every time you stand or walk. Your back takes strain it shouldn't. That's why so many people with tight hips also have lower back pain, especially after sitting.

How we treat it at Katasi Physiotherapy, Westlands
We check how your hip, back and buttocks move together. We loosen the tight front hip with hands-on treatment and gentle stretches, then strengthen your buttocks so they do their share of the work. If your back hurts too, we treat both, because they're linked. Read more in Stiff Front of the Hip? and Lower Back Pain: Why Rest and Scans Aren't the Answer.
See a doctor first if
The hip pain started after a fall, you can't put weight on the leg, you have a fever, or the pain wakes you at night and doesn't ease with rest.
