Back and Pelvic Pain in Pregnancy and After Delivery

pregnancy back pain physiotherapy Nairobi — physiotherapy assessment of the lower back and pelvis area

Turning over in bed feels like a big job. Climbing into a car or going up stairs sends a sharp pain to the back of your pelvis. Or your baby is here, and now feeding, lifting and carrying leave your back aching every evening. Many mums are told, "It's normal, just bear it." Common, yes. But you don't have to just bear it.

Why it happens

During pregnancy, your body releases hormones that loosen your joints to prepare for birth. Your growing bump also changes how you stand and walk. After delivery, tummy and back muscles are weaker, while you lift, bend and feed many times a day, often in a hunched position.

Small changes that help today

  • Keep your knees together when turning in bed or getting out of a car
  • Sleep with a pillow between your knees
  • Sit down to put on underwear, trousers and shoes
  • When feeding, bring the baby up to you with pillows instead of bending down
  • Carry your baby close to your body, and switch sides

How physiotherapy helps

Physiotherapy is safe during pregnancy and after birth. At Katasi Physiotherapy we use gentle hands-on treatment, simple exercises to support your back and pelvis, and advice on support belts, sleeping and feeding positions. After delivery, we help you rebuild strength step by step so you can lift your baby without pain. After a C-section, get your doctor's go-ahead first, usually at your postnatal check.
