Hip Pain When Sitting on a Low Couch or Chair? Why It Hurts and Keeps You Turning at Night

Look where the woman in the photo has her hand: the top and side of her hip, just above the buttock. If that's exactly where you ache, you know the feeling. You sink into a low couch at home, a plastic chair at a function, or a low matatu seat, and within minutes your hip starts to complain. Getting up is worse. At night you can't lie on that side, so you turn, and turn again, and wake up tired.
Why low seats make it worse
The muscles on the side of your hip (your side buttock muscles, or glutes) and their tendons wrap around the top of your thigh bone. When you sit low, your hips bend deeply and your knees often fall together or cross. That stretches and squeezes those tendons against the bone. If the muscles are weak, the tendons are already overloaded, so this squeeze is enough to set off the pain.
Lying on that side does the same thing: your body weight presses straight onto the sore spot. Lying on the other side, the top knee drops down and stretches it. That's why no position feels right and you keep turning.
Why the hip muscles get weak
- Long hours of sitting with little exercise
- Standing with your weight on one hip, or carrying a baby on your hip
- Changes after menopause, which make these tendons more sensitive
- Suddenly doing more walking, hiking or stairs
Signs this is your problem
- Ache at the side of the hip, sometimes spreading down the outer thigh
- Pain sitting in low chairs, crossing your legs or getting up after sitting
- Can't lie on that side, and the other side isn't comfortable either
- Pain on stairs, getting out of a car or standing on one leg
- A stubborn ache that keeps coming back, even after painkillers or an injection
How Katasi Physiotherapy treats it
We find exactly what's overloaded and how your hip muscles are coping. Hands-on treatment and dry needling ease the tight, painful muscles. Then we build up your hip muscles with gentle, step-by-step strengthening that calms the tendons instead of irritating them. You'll also get simple changes that bring relief quickly:
- Sit on higher chairs, or add a firm cushion to low couches
- Keep your knees apart and don't cross your legs
- Sleep with a pillow between your knees
- Stand evenly on both feet
